From Lilo to Bieber, the biggest scandals of 2011

What a sensational year it’s been, filled with divorces, drugs, baby daddy drama, and a disrespectful designer (scandals are always in style). It’s time to wrap up the year’s sinners and “winner”.

We look at Justin Bieber’s baby drama, Lilo’s run ins with the law, Kim and Kris’s nightmare wedding and more in today’s Holiday Wrap 2011 Biggest Scandals!

Lilo

Lindsay Lohan’s downward spiral continues to swirl. For the 25 year old, 2011 marked the end of her house arrest for a number of earlier convictions and misdemeanors. She showed up late for community service at the morgue, appeared in court looking looking haggard, and has recently posed for Playboy. Not exactly a recipe to recovery, Linds.

Kim’s Fairytale Wedding

For richer or poorer, til Ryan Seacrest do them part? Some say the wedding (and subsequent divorce) was a sham; a publicity stunt for her reality show. Was Kim’s sis Khloe right about Kris’ fame seeking intentions? Kim has denied such rumors, insisting the marriage wasn’t all she hoped it would be. Maybe the third time will be the charm (Kim wed a music producer when she was 19).

John Galliano

In the city of amour, British fashion designer John Galliano was showing no love for those of Hebrew heritage. Galliano attributed his addictions to alcohol, sleeping tablets and Valium as the cause for spouting anti-semitic and racist insults at people at a Paris bar. Racism is never in style, and he has since been fired from his coveted position at Dior and fined thousands of dollars.

Bieber baby

“Never Say Never”, right, JB? When the news broke that Justin Bieber might be the father of Mariah Yeater’s baby, fans went wild. Conveniently, his name couldn’t escape the headlines right before his album, Under The Mistletoe, was about to stock shelves. Bieber agreed to do a paternity test. Unfortunately, there won’t be “One Less Lonely Girl” because Yeater has dropped the paternity suit. Maybe she just wanted “Somebody To Love”?

Scarlett Johansson

Scar Jo is not the first actress to have nudes leaked and will definitely not be the last.

Schwarzenegger’s secret son

Arnold Schwarzenegger said “hasta la vista, baby” to his role as Governator of California this year. He also said good-bye to his 25-year marriage and the world [and his wife] said hello to the child he had with the family’s maid 13 years ago. A return to the big screen is what’s in store for Schwarzenegger next year.

Charlie Sheen

No stranger to substance abuse and addiction, Sheen stunned mainstream media with his “Tiger Blood” antics. Despite being fired from the hit series Two and a Half Men, Sheen maintained he was still “winning”. The actor went on the road with his show “Violent Torpedo of Truth” which was panned by critics. Sheen eventually simmered down, and was toasted at the Roast of Charlie Sheen in September.

Sleepless in Southern Ontario

As I walked into Keele subway station to begin my day, I crossed paths with others who were putting an end to theirs.

Tuesday afternoons in Concordia’s CJ building flash across my mind. Guest lecturers regaled about what we were in for. Long nights, early starts, weekends, the works! Was I ready? I would soon find out.

I arrived at Islington station.. 25 minutes early. There were other people waiting for the bus, as well. What were they waiting to get to? As the rain pitter-pattered in the distance, I wondered where my fellow passengers were headed. It’s something I often think about; where people are going. If I had a day off from school and Carrefour Laval would be swamped, I thought “Don’t they work?” Or, I’d have a late start in my post-secondary studies, and as I walked to the bus stop, I questioned whether all these people could be home for lunch? What occupied their days? What did they do?

Or, has a less than pleasant encounter with someone of the rudest kind set you off? It’s a quick write off– “What a bitch!” But, I tend to ponder what happened in their day or their life to make them have such a reaction. I digress, ah, the mind wanders so early in the day [at the time of this drafting].

Back to the bus stop: The man in the jacket with the “security” badge puts me at ease. The guy in the red pants, though as admirable as his style sense may be, sets off the unease the security guard put to rest.

Why was I the only female travelling at this un-Godly hour? 5 men at first. Then 10. A girl appears. 14 of us in total. Final count: 15, excluding myself. Misery definitely enjoys company– I took comfort in knowing I was not alone in sleep deprivation.

At 1:42 AM, I open my eyes to find solely myself and an old Asian man on the bus. 1:43, he’s gone and now it’s just me.

I failed to nod off on the Mi-Way 1: the Mississauga shuttle bus that brings me from Toronto to Oakville. I am no stranger to long commutes. The journey from Laval to Montreal for college and then again in University prepared me well.

Pros:
-I’d get a fair bit of reading done if I wasn’t so sleepy.
-No traffic– a rarity for the GTA (at any hour).

Cons:
-Very little sleep.

The incessant sound of the abnormally loud windshield wipers was irritating. The lights could stand to be dimmed much more at that hour, (and, they got even brighter once the doors swung open). As handy as I think the automated voice that announces the impending stops is, she should be silenced this early in the AM.

Don McLean’s “American Pie” (a family favorite) played through the speakers as I walked into Tim Horton’s . A smile made its way across my face. It’s only 2:04. I’m eternally early. With a french vanilla by my side, I rest my head on my arms, and wait.

Fast forward 9 hours– I made it through my 1st day as a New Writer for The Weather Network. I wrote copy for a 10-year vet. I was nervous to hand it over, but she had only positive things to say. The crew is very nice.

There were moments I thought if I just closed my eyes I’d be done for. That’s when you know it’s time get up, make tea or go pee. Snacks are the be all and end all of staying awake . Gotta keep that blood sugar up! As tired as I may be, it’s nice knowing people are counting down the time until lunch and I’m on my way home for the day.

What happened with Much Music? Nothing. I’ll be MIA during my 2 week training period, but I shall fulfill my blogging duties from home, as a good Kimtern would.

Rain or shine, see ya next time!

Much Too MUCH

Stepping out of the subway, the cool air hitting my face is sobering at the realization that a dream is coming true.

A glance upwards reveals the enormous facade of Toronto’s touristic trademark: the CN tower. Its monumental size is only undermined by the momentous feeling erupting within me. Every step draws me closer to my fate as a Much Music intern for next few months.

The fear of the unknown crept upon me in recent days. What can I expect? What will they, in turn, expect? I somehow managed to remain relaxed the eve of my first day. Could it be? Could I have overcome my nauseating nerves? Probably not. Maybe with a Bachelor’s degree under my belt, several internships and jobs in the field, I am finally ready.

J-School did not prepare me for what could have been my on-screen debut, however. Who knew the skill of whistling could have put me on the tube on day 2? If physics would allow for such a high pitch sound to escape my mouth than I may have been of help to a producer for one of Much’s live segments. Oh, well, I figure it’s a good sign if such an opportunity arose on my first day.

Transcribing interviews & footage and finding fashion stories to write for the blog have been my duties thus far. I’m excited to go out on location for shoots. Mostly, I’m excited to see what my time at Much Music in the Series & Development department helping with shows like #trending, Born To Be, My Date With, etc. will entail.

Hopefully I won’t abandon Kim’s Corner for another three months like my time in the Rockies.
