The Inaugural ANDPOP Bicep Battles

When it comes to avoiding doing actual work on Fridays, we here at ANDPOP are champion procrastinators. In fact, we decided to organize a mini-arm wrestling competition for this week’s Freaky Fun Friday  to help pass the time and invited some of our office besties to get their asses kicked join the fun.

With Fight Now’s Brigitte Truong hosting the shindig, the ANDPOP team tried to trash talk their way to victory. Sadly (and contrary to our beliefs), that’s not how to win at arm wrestling. So who has the biggest guns at this pathetic gun show?

Did they belong to CHCH’s social media guru Kimberly “Kimbotron” Lamontagne?ChartAttack’s editor-in-chief Richard “The ChartAttacker” Trapunski? ANDPOP’s host Simon “The Pounder” Mohos? Our web editor Portia “Mighty Mouse” Baladad? ANDPOP’s video editor Jacob “Fear The Beard” Morris? Or does the office’s most powerful biceps belong to our boss associate, Rob “Rob Ford” Ostfield?

Watch ANDPOP’s Annual Bicep Battles to find out who wins the highly coveted ass trophy!

4 TV Series We’re Excited For in 2014

In cold months like January, there isn’t much to do unless you’re a winter sports enthusiast. In fact, I much prefer the activity of channel surfing. I’m already hard at work training for the upcoming television season, because I must be in peak physical form especially where Helix is concerned.

1. Helix

The new SyFy show is going to sweep the nation. The potential outbreak of a deadly virus will infiltrate the masses and I’m certain viewers will be consumed by the thrilling episodic. The Hollywood Reporter has already hailed Helix as the nextBreaking Bad, just sayin’.

I’m also going to say that the name Jordan Hayes is sure to be on everyone’s lips in the new year. The Montreal-born actor is no stranger to the industry though. She starred and directed the short film Lay Over which debuted at TIFF in 2013. Asides from appearing on many Canadian and American TV series, she’s also shared the big screen with Jennifer Lawrence and Daniel Radcliffe. I look forward to watching her fight for of mankind’s future, and you should too.

2. Girls

SOURCE: People

It’s been quite some time since Hannah’s OCD came back with a vengeance, leading her to get a Q-Tip stuck in her ear. I, like so many other people, have been not-so patiently waiting for the return of Girls. The smartly directed and wittily written series comes alive in this ode to a generation. The HBO show has been referred to as the Sex and the City of today and, with some accuracy, depicts the complex relationships and inner dialogues that torment 20-somethings.

So, will Hannah and Adam get back together? Will Marnie finally find happiness? Will Shoshanna reunite with Ray? So many burning questions! I, for one, am excited to see what its creator and star Lena Dumham has up her sleeve this season.

3. Orange is the New Black

The Netflix original series Orange is the New Black took binge viewing to new levels. The realization of memoirist Piper Kerman’s novel-turned-series was an addictive force to be reckoned with on the subscriber service.

We will soon be reunited with the inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary for a second season, but perhaps not all of them. Just as a refresher, Piper’s TV counterpart, Piper Chapman, might have ended Pennsatucky’s Jesus preaching ways. Laaawd have mercy!

The insider look into a women’s prison thrilled viewers, and also inspired many a Halloween costume this year, including my own:

4. The Originals

I must admit this viewer had her concerns about whether The Vampire Diaries spin off, The Originals would be able to follow in TVD‘s successful footsteps.

Without so much as a shirtless cameo from Ian Somerhalder how could the show survive? Well, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) took care of that qualm, or his dreamy persona and impeccable good looks did. And, the captivating plot twists & sexy secondary characters don’t hurt matters.

The mid-season finale had Cami & Davina coming together potentially to conspire against Marcel and Klaus. Hayley and Elijah looked like they are an episode, or two away from hooking up. And, I can’t wait for mid-january when the show returns from it’s mid-season break.

P.S.: The Originals is said to be The CW’s most successful new series which means after the second half of season one next year, we might have a season two to look forward to.

5 Reasons Why We Miss The Originals

You know how a vampire feels when they’ve been deprived of blood for long stretches of time? That’s how we feel. Withdrawal is no fun. We need an Original family fix ASAP.

As you probably know, The Originals is on hiatus. A new episode will not grace our screens until mid-January, and we’re deeply saddened by this. Aside from awesome storylines, here are some specifics we miss about those sexy supernatural creatures.

1. Witty repartee

Klaus has always had a way with words. A master of puns, we’re sure the memoirs he’s penning in the series is going to be a thrilling read. We wish the book was available to us on Amazon. I suppose, we’ll just have to settle on his weekly quotable quotes.

2. Pretty boy

Elijah’s face is a work of art. A sculpture chiseled to the utmost perfection makes for a pleasurable viewing experience.

3. Playlist love

The CW knows how to compliment a script with evocative tunes and indie hits!Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries blended music marvellously, and The Originalscontinues the tradition.

4. Forbidden fruit

The tension between Hayley and Elijah has this viewer on edge. They’re clearly feelin’ it, but because she is carrying Klaus’ hybrid baby, there’s bro code etiquette to be followed.

5. Suave sinner

Marcel is one smooth talker. It’s no wonder this beauty ruled the city of New Orleans as this ruthless leader knows how to take charge and make others follow suit. He has our vote any day!

Purple Pride: Your PanCan Playlist

It’s that time of year: hairy face time!

Yes, yes, it’s Movember, BUUUT it’s also Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. PanCan Month is like Movember’s younger brother; it’s not as cool, and it doesn’t get out much.

Pancreatic cancer only has a 6% survival rate compared to prostate cancer (AKA the reason why everyone you know has a moustache right now) which boasts a 98% survival rate. None the less, AFA jumped on the boyish bandwagon and added a moustache charm to their collection.

What’s AFA, you say?  Accessorize For Awareness hand makes charmed bracelets for only $5 with your dollars going to fund a cure for pancreatic cancer.

Aside from indulging in AFA’s #ArmCandyForACure, you can show your support in the following ways:

-Take to Twitter & tweet at your fave celebs using the hashtag #EndPanCan, mention @accessorizefor & demand RTs.
-Throw on some purple swag and pump up these purple tunes

Your official PanCan playlist:

“We Can’t Stop” listening to Miley’s Bangerz and love that the first single off the album is swimming in purple (pun intended). The pool scenes are all lit up in purp. Enjoy above.

Side note: ANDPOP is aware certain lyrics were inspired by the influence of marijuana; we in no way are condoning the use of drugs, but rather appreciate the purple representation.

Miss Perry is looking pretty with her purple hair, and her song “Wide Awake” is a wake up call & anthem for purple awareness.

Out of all her hair colours (& characters), we think Nicki Minaj a.k.a. (Barbie/Ninja/Roman) looks best when rocking a purple wig and weave like in “Starships.”

Once upon a time, before his monkey, selfies and tattoos, The Biebs was associated with purple. It’s subtle but in “Never Say Never” he’s got a lilac-y tee under his saweet leather jacket.

Your parents might have owned this record, and grooved along to the musical stylings of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” It’s an iconic song and well worth a listen (even if your parents love it).

Now, Prince’s “Purple Rain” is a classic, but for your viewing pleasure, here’s Beyonce teaming up with the legend himself to perform the song at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

These next two need no introduction because Mac Miller  & NAS’  ”Purple” really needn’t an explanation as to why they were chosen (ahem, their titles).

Making purple sound red hot are the Red Hot Chili Peppers with “Purple Stain.”

Now kids, this may come as a surprise but before Eminem went “Berzerk”, he was part of a hip hop group (and may still be) called D12 which stands for The Dirty Dozen. And, they had themselves quite a hit with their song “Purple Pills.” It even made it on the Top 40… in the Netherlands.

Kimberly Lamontagne

Kimberly Lamontagne is in favour of puns, puppies and Kimstagrams. She’s a lover of all things lifestyle and pop culture. Most importantly, Kim accessorizes for awareness.

Hit home room with style! Peel yourself off the couch, and get ready for back to school. Before heading to class, a little shopping is always in order.

Kimberly Lamontagne did her homework as she studied the styles and calculated the trends. Here’s what accessories she’s adding to her cart this semester.

1. Awesome rings

Taking notes will be a lot less dull with these dazzlers on each joint.

2. Stud-tastic phone cases

It’s time to dress those digital devices; this case is the perfect cross between floral and studs.

3. Living à la Gossip Girl

Keeping gadgets safe & sound in, or out of a locker is a cinch, while daydreams of a semester abroad in the city of lights à la Serena and Blair may occur. #RIPGossipGirl

4. Old school classics

These sneakers are hardly a new creation, but Converse have made a comeback. Since the shoes’ popular resurgence, I crave a pair of low tops ASAP.

5. Arm candy

Via Accessorize For Awareness

These charming Accessorize For Awareness bracelets that my family makes for pancreatic cancer provide instant good karma. They’re fashionable, affordable, and help to #EndPanCan. It’s #ArmCandyForACure!

6. Backpacks

And, now I’d like to take all of the above, and store it in a Herschel bag. But, not just any backpack — a birdie back pack!
